Christian Scaroni produced a last-day overhaul on Green Mountain to win the 2026 Tour of Oman for XDS Astana, attacking inside the final kilometre of the Jabal al Akhdhar summit finish to take both the queen stage and the overall in one move. He started Stage 5 four seconds behind overnight leader Mauro Schmid (Jayco-AlUla); the short, savage 5.7 km / ~10.4% climb did what it always does and reshaped the GC. Cristián Rodríguez completed an Astana 1-2 at +24s, with UAE's Adam Yates third at +44s. The sprints went to Sebastián Molano (Stage 1) and Erlend Blikra (Stage 4); Baptiste Veistroffer (Stage 2) and Schmid himself (Stage 3 uphill) took the hillier days.

§ 01 · The race in 90 seconds

Scaroni overturns Schmid on Green Mountain for an Astana 1-2

OPENINGThe race opened on the flat with a bunch sprint to the Bimmah Sink Hole, where Sebastián Molano edged Fernando Gaviria and Gerben Thijssen to take Stage 1 and the first leader's jersey on time bonuses. Stage 2 to the Yitti Hills was punchier: Baptiste Veistroffer (Lotto-Intermarché) won from a small group ahead of Henok Mulubrhan and Thibaud Gruel and moved into the overall lead, with the climbers all still bunched within touching distance.

UNFOLDSThe first GC selection came on Stage 3's uphill finish at Misfat al Abriyeen in the Eastern Mountains. Mauro Schmid (Jayco-AlUla) won the day ahead of Christian Scaroni (same time) and took the leader's jersey, building a four-second cushion over Scaroni with Martin Tjøtta third at +9s. Stage 4 to Sohar was a routine sprint day — Erlend Blikra (Uno-X) outkicked Emmanuel Houcou and Molano — and the GC top order froze: Schmid +0, Scaroni +4, Tjøtta +9 into the final stage.

DECIDEDEverything came down to the Stage 5 summit finish on Jabal al Akhdhar / Green Mountain, the 5.7 km wall averaging ~10.4%. After Adam Yates threw in the first serious acceleration roughly 2 km from the top, the favourites' group splintered and Schmid was the first GC man to crack. Scaroni sat behind the moves, then launched inside the final kilometre with no response. He soloed clear to win the stage and seize the overall in a single stroke; team-mate Rodríguez crossed second on the stage to underline XDS Astana's control of the finale.

FINALEScaroni took the overall by 24 seconds from Rodríguez, an Astana 1-2, with Yates salvaging the final podium step at +44s for UAE. Schmid, having defended the lead superbly through Stages 3 and 4, slipped from the jersey to fourth (also +44s) when the pure climbers made their move; Paul Double completed the top five. It was Scaroni's second GC victory in as many seasons after the 2025 Tour des Alpes-Maritimes.

XDS Astana's 2026 form continuation reached its peak here: a perfectly executed final-stage coup on Green Mountain. Scaroni shadowed the moves and timed his attack inside the last kilometre to overturn a four-second deficit, while Cristián Rodríguez delivered second on the stage and overall to lock out the top two. Diego Ulissi and Henok Mulubrhan had already kept the team prominent on the sprint and hilly days (Mulubrhan 2nd on Stage 2), making this a deep, week-long team performance rather than a single-rider raid.

Held the lead, lost it on the wall

Mauro Schmid rode the week of his GC life — winning the Stage 3 uphill at Misfat al Abriyeen, taking the leader's jersey and defending it across Stage 4 — but the short, savage Jabal al Akhdhar finish is a pure-climber's test, and he was the first GC man to crack when Yates and Scaroni went. He slid to fourth at +44s, with Paul Double fifth. A strong, attacking ride that fell agonisingly short of the podium on the final climb.

Without Pogačar, UAE split the week between a sprint and a GC objective. Sebastián Molano delivered the opening-stage bunch sprint at the Bimmah Sink Hole (and was third again on Stage 4), while Adam Yates carried the GC card. Yates lit the decisive Green Mountain acceleration that broke the race open, and although Scaroni countered to win, the move secured Yates third overall — a solid early-season GC marker.

Baptiste Veistroffer took the punchy Stage 2 to the Yitti Hills and briefly held the overall lead — a standout early-season result for the young Frenchman and the team's headline of the week before the GC men took over on the climbs.

Blikra sprint win, Tjøtta in the mix

Uno-X had two strings to its bow: Erlend Blikra won the Stage 4 bunch sprint to Sohar, and Martin Tjøtta sat third on GC after the Stage 3 selection before fading to ninth overall by the finish. A productive desert week split between the flat and the climbs.

Won the overall. Scaroni rode a patient GC week, finishing second on the Stage 3 uphill (same time as Schmid) to sit four seconds off the lead. He saved everything for Green Mountain on Stage 5: after Yates fractured the group ~2 km from the top, Scaroni stayed glued to the moves and then launched inside the final kilometre, soloing clear to win the stage and overturn his deficit for the GC. It was his second stage-race overall in as many seasons after the 2025 Tour des Alpes-Maritimes, and the headline early-season result of his career-best campaign.

The 2026 Tour of Oman followed the race's long-standing script — four tightly controlled days on minimal gaps, then the Jabal al Akhdhar wall reshuffling everything on the final afternoon. For XDS Astana it was a statement of early-season depth, a GC 1-2 built on a perfectly timed final-kilometre move. For Scaroni it confirmed a stage-race pedigree that would carry into an aggressive, combative Giro d'Italia campaign.
