Stage 5: Stirling → Stirling
Tour Down Under 2026
Matthew Brennan won the final stage from a reduced sprint after a late kangaroo crossing crashed the lead group — his first WorldTour stage win, on the day Vine sealed the overall.
Brennan wins stage 5, with a kangaroo in the script
169.8 km, eight laps of a Stirling circuit, 3,436 m of elevation, finishing on the 2 km Mount Barker Road climb. The finale produced the week's most-shared video: a kangaroo crossed the road and caused a crash in the lead group. The race still resolved in a reduced sprint.
Brennan attacked over the top of the leadout. Kwiako led out at 300 m, Gilmore countered, Brennan took the line. A first WorldTour stage win, 21 years old, for the rider who'd then go on to lead Van Aert into Arenberg at Roubaix three months later.
Vine wins the GC
Vine the overall winner, Schmid 2nd at 1:03, Sweeny 3rd at 1:12. Brennan keeps the young rider classification.
