Ayuso again was the best of the rest, dropping Jorgenson, Johannessen and Cristián Rodríguez late to take second on the stage at +1:00 and climb onto the final podium in third overall at +1:17 — a strong recovery from his stage 6 setback.

Juan Ayuso's first season in Lidl–Trek colours brought him to the Tour Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes (the rebranded Critérium du Dauphiné) in June as a Tour de France warm-up GC card alongside teammate Mattias Skjelmose. The week tested his resilience: caught on the wrong side of the decisive stage-6 split to Crest-Voland, he conceded over three minutes, but he responded with two of the strongest climbing performances of the race — second behind Isaac del Toro on both summit finishes, the Grand Colombier (stage 7) and Plateau de Solaison (stage 8). That recovery lifted him to third overall at +1:17, salvaging a podium from a difficult mid-race and re-establishing him in the Grand Tour conversation heading into July. With del Toro also on the rise, the race underlined the depth of climbing talent Ayuso will measure himself against at the Tour de France.
The 2026 race log — most recent first
Ayuso was the only rider to limit del Toro's stage gains, taking second at +0:24 and moving to fourth overall at +1:06 — back in genuine podium contention after the stage 6 setback.
Ayuso was on the wrong side of the early split and lost +3:37, dropping to +3:15 overall. The damage set up his aggressive final two days alongside teammate Skjelmose.
Lidl–Trek's solid fourth-place team ride kept Ayuso and Skjelmose at +0:47, a manageable deficit going into the mountains.
Ayuso was caught in the stage-6 split but responded with two podium finishes on the mountain stages, second behind del Toro on both, to recover to third overall. A resilient week that re-established him in the GC conversation ahead of the summer.
Ayuso capped a near-perfect Algarve by winning the Malhão summit sprint in the yellow jersey, the exclamation point on his Lidl-Trek debut victory. Across the week he was second at Fóia, second in the ITT (only 6s off Ganna), and the strongest in the finale, defending then extending his lead. It was a statement GC win to open his new chapter.
- Won the uphill sprint at Malhão ahead of Onley and Seixas to seal the GC
Ayuso's second place, just six seconds off Ganna, was arguably the ride of the day for a climber-GC rider and locked down the yellow jersey. It gave him breathing room over Seixas going into the final mountain stage.
- Second in the ITT, conceding only 6s to Ganna
Making his Lidl-Trek debut, Ayuso could not beat Seixas in the sprint but rode into the leader's jersey on the strength of bonus seconds and the gaps he opened on the rest of the GC field. He held the lead from here to the finish, capping it with the stage win at Malhão.
- Second on the stage; moved into the overall lead
Ayuso won the GC on his Lidl-Trek debut with a near-flawless week: second at the Fóia summit (taking yellow on bonuses), an outstanding second in the Vilamoura ITT only six seconds off Ganna, and the decisive stage win in yellow atop the Alto do Malhão. He survived a late Vauquelin/Lipowitz threat on the final day before sprinting clear of Onley and Seixas. A statement opening GC of his new chapter.
- Stage 2 — 2nd at Fóia, took the yellow jersey
- Stage 3 — 2nd in the ITT, only 6s off Ganna, defended yellow
- Stage 5 — won at Malhão to seal the overall
