Jay Vine's 2026 began with the Tour Down Under overall — a textbook UAE GC win on the team's reliable summer-Aussie template, with the closing kicker the now-iconic kangaroo collision on Stage 5 that gave him a broken wrist on the way to the jersey. The wrist was the story for two months: he sat out the early-spring block, returned to racing at Volta a Catalunya in March still managing pain, and then crashed again on Stage 3 of that race and abandoned — eight weeks of recovery cut short by a second incident inside the wrist's healing window.

The Giro d'Italia in May was meant to be the rebuild's payoff: a return to GC on a stage race Vine had targeted for years. Instead, Stage 2 in Bulgaria produced UAE's worst day of 2026 — a mass crash inside 21 km to go that took out four of the team's riders. Vine fractured an elbow and suffered a concussion, was immediately withdrawn, and joined Soler (fractured pelvis), Adam Yates (concussion), and Baroncini on UAE's mid-May injury list. The TDU win is the year's bright spot; everything since has been recovery interrupted by re-injury.

Won the GC by more than a minute on Schmid, Stage 2 win on Corkscrew Road sealing the overall. The closing storyline was darker: a kangaroo crossed the road on Stage 5 and Vine collided with it, breaking his wrist — still won the overall, then sat out eight weeks of the spring recovering. Volta a Catalunya in March was supposed to be the return; instead a Stage 3 crash and abandon. The Giro Stage 2 mass crash in May broke his elbow.

Australian Road National Championships — Men's Elite Road Race

Vine arrived at nationals in form, taking the elite men's individual time trial title earlier in the week. In the road race he was on the wrong side of the split when the 14-rider break formed, tried and failed to bridge solo, then committed to a long, largely single-handed chase on the front of the peloton that clawed back the leaders' advantage and reopened the race. He had nothing left when the decisive moves came in the finale and finished out of the medals, but his work was the reason the bunch came back into contention at all.
