Felix Gall, Austria's premier stage-race climber, sharpened his 2026 in the spring stage races and signalled big Giro ambitions at the Volta a Catalunya, where he took second on the brutal Coll de Pal queen stage behind a rampant Jonas Vingegaard. That hierarchy repeated all through the Giro d'Italia, where Gall was the clear best of the rest in the mountains — runner-up to Vingegaard on Blockhaus, at Pila, at Carì and on the final climb to Piancavallo. The consistency earned him second overall at +5:22, clear of Jai Hindley in third — the standout Grand Tour result of his career and confirmation of his standing among the world's elite climbers. He carries that form toward the summer's biggest races.
Gall again rode as best-of-the-rest, chasing Vingegaard's final-climb attack at a distance and coming home second on the stage at +1:15 alongside Hindley. He secures second overall at +5:22 — the standout Grand Tour result of his career and confirmation as the nearest, if distant, rival to the dominant maglia rosa.
Gall went on the offensive on the final climb to Piani di Pezzè, the only GC man willing to test Vingegaard. He briefly distanced Hindley but could not shake the maglia rosa, the pair finishing together for 4th and 5th on the stage. He holds second overall at +4:03 — the gap unchanged — and remains the clear, if distant, challenger with only Piancavallo left to try something.
Gall remained second overall at 4:03 behind Vingegaard, holding his position without incident on a stage that the GC contenders conceded to the breakaway. He finished in the main peloton group more than five minutes behind Valgren. With no attacking on the Andalo finish among the favourites, Gall's deficit to the pink jersey was unchanged. He stays the leading challenger to Vingegaard going into the decisive final mountain stages.
Gall was again the only rider able to react when Vingegaard attacked at 6.5 km to go, but his resistance was brief before he dropped back to the chasers. In the closing kilometres he recovered and, with a sharp acceleration inside the final 2 km, dropped Hindley and Arensman to take second on the stage. The ride lifts him to second overall at +4:03, the best of the rest behind the dominant maglia rosa.
Best of the rest for the third time in this Giro. When Vingegaard accelerated, Gall could not respond and spent the final ~4.5 km chasing from ever further behind, ultimately conceding 49 seconds. The ride moved him up to third overall, swapping places with Arensman, and confirmed him as the strongest of the chasers behind Vingegaard.
Gall sat tight in the peloton on a stage that offered nothing for the GC men, conserving for the stage-14 Pila summit finish. He stayed safe in the group as it rolled home more than 13 minutes behind the breakaway. He remains 4th overall at +2:30, well placed to attack on the first true mountain test of the race.
A pure climber on a flat TT, Gall did roughly what was expected — limiting losses but not improving. He finished 33rd at +4:22 and held his ground relative to Hindley, but Arensman's surge dropped him from 3rd to 4th overall, now just under two minutes (+2:24) from pink. Still very much in the GC fight ahead of the mountains.
Gall lit the GC battle, attacking as soon as the road reared up into the final 3km. Only Vingegaard could follow. He drove the pace at the front as the pair caught the break, but could not respond when the Dane kicked after the flamme rouge, finishing second at +0:12. He climbed to third overall at +2:59.
