Stage 7: Sorbolo Mezzani → Salice Terme
Giro d'Italia Women 2026
Twenty-year-old Célia Gery (FDJ - SUEZ) took her first Grand Tour win, coming over the top of Lucinda Brand in a small-group sprint after Elisa Longo Borghini instigated a late move on the Pietragavina climb. Anna van der Breggen survived a heavy crash ~50 km out to keep the maglia rosa.
Gery's late attack delivers a first Grand Tour win
The 159 km hilly stage from Sorbolo Mezzani to Salice Terme produced an aggressive, attacking day. A five-rider break (Alison Jackson, Chantal Pegolo, Marjolein van 't Geloof, Sara Luccon, Gaia Segato) went up the road early.
On the category-3 Pietragavina climb with about 20 km to go, Elisa Longo Borghini attacked from the peloton, dragging teammate Silvia Persico, U23 world champion Célia Gery and Lucinda Brand across to the break to form a lead group of around seven with a gap of more than 30 seconds. In the finale Persico peeled off after her work, and Brand launched the sprint first — but the 20-year-old Gery came over the top to take her first Grand Tour stage win. Lara Gillespie won the chasing bunch sprint about eight seconds back.
Behind, the GC day was defined by a major crash with around 50 km to go that brought down race leader Anna van der Breggen. She lost up to 1:30 but chased back to the bunch within about 7 km, saving the maglia rosa.
Van der Breggen crashes but retains pink
Despite a heavy crash with ~50 km to go, Anna van der Breggen chased back and kept the maglia rosa with her GC lead intact heading into the queen stage. The GC contenders behind her — Vollering, Niedermaier, Holmgren, Reusser and Longo Borghini — remained within striking range, with the standings essentially carried over from the previous mountain day. Two riders were disqualified during the stage for holding onto team cars.
